The menu said, “An American style IPA, our Big Red combines the distinctive and assertive citrus flavor and aroma of Amarillo hops with a crisp, pleasantly bitter finish.”
It came with a thick creamy head and was a pale orangish/red color. I was also amazed at the clarity of this beer as well. It had a pretty good hop aroma, with a mix of citrus and hop spiciness.
The body was thin, but true to style. It was clean and crisp with a great hop bite to it. I guess it was the Amarillo hops, but it seemed to have a bit of a spicy hop flavor. However, in the finish the hops tasted spicy, but also a bit grassy. All in all, I really liked the hop flavor, as it was more complex and different than the mostly Cascade hopped IPAs that seem to be so common.
It went great with my burger, and while I couldn’t finish my burger, I did finish the IPA. In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting much from a small chain brewpub, but I really have to hand it to The Ram Restaurant and Brewery for a great IPA.
