It’s been a super rainy weekend so far – as we’ve gotten 8.5 inches of rain the last 24 hours. I’ve worked on our sump pump and have been checking the house for leaks and water intrusion all day. So after a long day, I knew it was time for a beer. I picked up this beer during our spring break trip to Florida, and have been meaning to review it soon.
Location: Poured into a pint glass from the 12oz can at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 7.3% ABV, 56 IBUs, 15.5 Plato OG, ~260 Calories
Ingredients: Malts: Pale Ale, Munich, Crystal; Hops: Centennial, Cascade, Columbus
Appearance & Aroma: The beer has a dark golden color with some amber hues to it, and it’s slightly hazy. It had a big tan, rocky head on it that fell after a few minutes to a thin layer over the top, although it left a nice bit of lacing throughout. It has a very nice piney hop aroma with a slight bit of dankness to it.
Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is smooth and a bit oily from the hops. There’s a resinous-piney hop juiciness up front, which becomes slightly sharper in the middle. There’s a sweet maltiness that creeps up behind the hops in the finish, but the hops are still the most prominent flavor. The hops have a resin-piney flavor and bitterness that lasts for several minutes in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: With the piney hop flavors, I’d pair this beer with something cheesy, such as a pizza, mac and cheese, or cheeseburger.
Overall Impression: This is definitely a hop-forward IPA with a great combination of hop flavors. I enjoy the resinous-piney hop flavors, and the sweet maltiness kicked up a bit to balance it briefly in the finish. With the resinous hops, the flavors stick around for quite a while. Overall, it has a nice hop flavor that lasts, making it a solid IPA.
