964. Rockwell Beer Co. – Sven Kölsh Style Ale

964. Rockwell Brewing - Sven Kölsh Style AleTGIF! I’m watching my Mizzou Tigers in the second round of the SEC basketball tournament and decided to crack open a beer. This beer was given to me by my Mizzou fraternity brother who happens to be the brewmaster at Rockwell Beer Co.

Location: Poured from the 16oz can into a Pilsner style glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 5% ABV, ~150 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: This beer has a bright golden color and is extremely clear. It has a small, bright white head that fell quickly to a thin layer of bubbles over the top. It has a grainy-bready aroma with a bit of lager-like sulfur smell behind it.

Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is lightly crisp. The flavor up front is fairly grainy-malty with not much sweetness. The sweetness comes in more in the middle, but it’s quickly followed by a lightly spicy bitterness from the hops in the finish. The finish is clean and lightly dry and the grainy-maltiness and lightly spicy bitterness lasts briefly in the finish.

Food Pairing: I had this beer with a Panera French onion soup in a bread bowl, and it was a great pairing. The grainy-breadlines of the beer complimented the meal and the light crispness of the beer was a nice contrast to the hearty soup. The grainy-breadiness of this beer would be a great pairing with almost any meal, particularly something like a burger that mixes savoriness and readiness.

Overall Impression: In my opinion, this is what an all grain light beer is supposed to taste like. The grainy-maltiness is great, and the breadiness complements it. The balance of grainy sweetness and lightly spicy hoppiness was great. Overall, this was a great beer, and next time I’m in St. Louis, I’m picking up more of this beer for hot summer nights in front of the fire pit.
