304. The Bruery – Mischief Belgian Style Ale

The Bruery MischiefI’m hanging out at The Abbey Brewing Company in Miami Beach, Florida this afternoon.  I’ve tried their Immaculate IPA and Father Theodore’s Stout, while having a nice conversation with their Brewmaster/President Raymond Rigazio.  He had to leave, but I stuck around for a bit nursing my stout.  Since it’s Easter/Passover this week, things were extremely slow at the bar.  So, I got to know Carlos the bartender, and we discussed some of our favorite beers. While working, he was sampling this beer and offered me a glass to try.

Location: Bottle at The Abbey Brewing Company in Miami Beach, FL

Numbers: 8.5% ABV, 35 IBUs, 5 SRM

Appearance & Aroma: I had the end of the bottle, so it was a little cloudy from yeast, but it was a golden straw color with a nice frothy white head.  There were malty aromas with a slightly lemony and wet grass, farmhouse like smells.

Taste & Feel: There was a bit of crispness when I first sipped the light bodied beer.  I first noticed a lemony, almost lemon-pepper like flavor up front.  In the middle a bready, pilsner-like malty flavor cut through the lemon pepper spiciness.  The finish was dry with a slightly citrusy hop bitterness.

Food Pairing: The lemon and bready flavors would go perfectly with a lightly flavored or buttered fish with a crispy breaded coating.

Overall Impression: This was a light and effervescent beer with mostly lemon and peppery spicy flavors.  The bready maltiness, along with the dry bitter hoppiness in the finish added a nice complexity.  Overall, it was a light, refreshing Belgian beer, good for the heat of Miami Beach.  While I realize the lemon and peppery spiciness comes with it being a Belgian, I’m not a huge fan of the flavors in my beer.  However, I really appreciated Carlos for sharing it with me and giving me the opportunity to try it.
