As I mentioned in my last post (Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse – Captain’s Choice IPA Draft), I’m in the Dallas, Texas area for work and just flew in. My coworker and I stopped here on the way to our hotel to grab a bite to eat and a beer. Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse is attached to the Bass Pro Outdoor World in Grapevine, TX. As you can see by the photo, the dinning room is very impressive, and the atmosphere is great. This picture was taken from our table at the sports bar, perched up above the dinning room.
After our experience with the Captain’s Choice IPA, we decided to try a different beer. I selected the Brown Ale, and my coworker followed suit. The menu said, “A big malty ale brewed with a variety of chocolate, caramel, and rye malts giving it a smooth malt sweetness. 6% ABV.”
Served in a pint glass, it was a very dark brown color, almost black, and there was absolutely no head on it. In fact, there was no noticeable carbonation in the beer at all. As advertised, it had a chocolate and caramelly malty aroma.
The body was medium-full, and the mouthfeel was smooth, and almost syrupy, since there was no carbonation in it. There was a bit of a cocoa flavor up front, followed by a caramel and cocoa malty sweetness. The finish was mostly the same sweetness with a hint of an earthy hop bitterness.
It went OK with my buffalo burger, but primarily because the cocoa and caramel sweetness seemed to go with the sauteed mushrooms and onions on my burger. It might go better with some BBQ ribs with a sweet BBQ sauce on it.
The first few sips of this beer weren’t bad, but the lack of carbonation, combined with the solid body and malt sweetness made it difficult to finish. With the right amount of carbonation, it may have been better, but instead, it felt like I was drinking beer syrup. After the IPA and then this, I’m not sure why we decided to try another one of their beers, but we did.
