952. Triptych – Really Dank Meme

952. Triptych - Really Dank MemeWe’ve been in quarantine for almost five months now and we’ve had a lot going on. I’ve been finishing my work rebuilding our deck and we had a patio poured a couple weeks ago in anticipation of a hot tub. It’s also been super busy at work. So, when I found out today was “IPA Day,” I didn’t need much motivation to reach for a craft beer. I picked this one up on my last trip to the grocery store since my wife likes their regular Dank Meme.

Location: Poured from the pint-sized can into a large Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 6.2% ABV, ~200 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s a bright golden-straw yellow color and it’s very hazy with a big rocky white head that fell to a thin layer over the top after a few minutes. It has a bright citrusy aroma with some lemon-like smells and hints of grass.

Taste & Feel: It’s solidly medium bodied with a smooth and slightly creamy and oily mouthfeel. The flavor up front is lightly sweet with some light lemongrass and papaya-like citrus flavors. It gets sweeter in the middle with a nice bready maltiness, but the lemongrass and papaya citrus flavors comes back stronger in the finish – with a bit of citrusy bitterness underneath. The lemongrass and papaya citrus flavors last a minute or so in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: The citrus and lemongrass would pair nicely and complement a seafood dish like crab or shrimp. However, it could also be a nice contrast to something salty and savory like a Canadian bacon pizza.

Overall Impression: It was a lighter, brighter than expected IPA with some lighter citrus flavors. With the light, semi-bright flavors, it was a refreshingly good summer beer. I could see this being a great beer on a hot afternoon out on the lake. It was a good beer on its own, but since Triptych was trying to leverage their “dank meme” brand, I think it was a bit of a miss. I like their regular Dank Meme, and was expecting this to be a bigger, better version of that (with the name “REALLY” Dank Meme), but it wasn’t.
