It was extremely clear and amber in color. There was a fast dissolving head, leaving almost nothing while I drank it. There was a very distinct aroma to it… it had the usual malty aroma of an Oktoberfest marzen, but it also had quite a grainy smell – similar to the aroma of cooled spent grains when homebrewing.
It had a light-medium body and was fairly smooth and drinkable. There was a nice light caramel malt flavor up front, and a little bit of a grainy flavor in the finish. Much the same as the aroma, the grainy flavor reminded me of a very raw grainy flavor when dealing with raw grains.
It was light enough that it could have gone with almost any meal, however, due to the graininess, I kept thinking about oatmeal as I was drinking it. The grainy flavor would probably go very well with raw oats in oatmeal.
I found this beer to be fairly light and very drinkable. The grainy smell and taste was not a turn off to me, but instead made me feel that it was a little closer to a true brew (not a big brewery beer brewed with rice). Overall, it was a good Oktoberfest beer with a grainy flavor that makes you appreciate the harvest this time of year.
