913. Ex Novo Brewing – Dynamic Duo IIPA

913. Ex Novo Brewing - Dynamic Duo IIPAAs I mentioned in my last post, we’ve spent the last several days in and around Portland, Oregon. My awesome friend @Bettywriter let my wife and I stay at her place overlooking the Willamette River. We explored Portland, the Columbia River Gorge, and the coast. It’s been awesome, but tomorrow we’re headed home. I just finished up the last of the Tropic Pines Juicy IPA 4-pack I had, and now I’m finishing up the last of the beers I bought for chilling on the patio and watching the boats go by. This one is Dynamic Due IIPA from Ex Novo Brewing here in Portland.

Location: Poured into a pint glass at my friend @Bettywriter‘s condo in Portland, OR.

Numbers: 9.5% ABV, 77 IBUs, ~370 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: The pour is bright golden-orange in color and pretty clear. It had a foamy, rocky head that fell after several minutes to a ring around the edge of the glass. The aroma is straightforward with bold citrusy hops.

Taste & Feel: The body is medium and the mouthfeel is smooth and lightly oily from the hops. The flavor up front is sweet, but it’s the citrusy flavors that are most noticeable with a little bit of light malty sweetness detectable behind it. In the middle, the citrus flavors mix with some orange, mango, and grapefruit flavors. The bitterness comes on in the finish, with a more general citrus flavor and bitterness mixed. It’s the citrusy bitterness that lasts for a minute or two in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: With all the citrusy flavors, I think it might pair nicely with a cheesy meal, like a cheese pizza or maybe even a hawaiian pizza. I might also pair this with something like fish tacos or a taco salad.

Overall Impression: The body and mouthfeel definitely made this beer not feel like it was as big of a beer as it really is. It was very drinkable, and I enjoyed the mix of citrusy hop flavors. However, I thought the bitterness overpowered the hop flavors a bit too much in the finish (as I like my IPAs balanced toward hop flavor). Overall, it was still a good beer, and it was enjoyable to sip on it as I took in my last views from the condo.

My Rating: ★★★½☆
