817. Blue Moon Brewing – Rounder Belgian Style Pale Ale

817. Blue Moon Brewing - Rounder Belgian Style Pale AleI left my job at Advocate Health Care and am going back to work at State Farm corporate headquarters (were I left 2 years ago). I’m taking a week off between jobs. Today was a busy day of running errands, so to chill a bit, I thought I’d grab a beer from the fridge. My wife picked up a mixed 12 pack from Blue Moon several months ago, which is how I got this beer.

Location: Poured into a pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL

Numbers: 5.6% ABV, ~130 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s dark amber in color and very clear. It had a nice, light tan head that fell after several minutes. The aroma is caramel malty with some lightly earthy hops in the background.

Taste & Feel: The body is medium, and the mouthfeel is a bit crisp. The flavor up front is lightly sweet and malty with hints of earthy hops. The earthy hoppiness and maltiness balance out in the middle. The maltiness gets more bold and slightly sweeter in the finish along with the earthy hop bitterness growing, but remaining in the background. Both the maltiness and earthy bitterness stick around for a minute in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: I think the caramel maltiness and earthy bitterness would nicely complement a cheeseburger, and would also pair with BBQ or a mushroom covered steak.

Overall Impression: This beer was much more malty than I was expecting. I enjoyed the caramel malty flavor that was not too sweet because it was balanced by the nice earthy bitterness that wonderfully matched it. I’m not so sure about the style, but overall, I thought it was a very good tasting fall beer – perfect for a cool evening.
