780. Notch Brewing – Left of the Dial IPA

780. Notch Brewing - Left of the Dial IPAI’m in Boston on my wife’s work trip, and we took a beer tour of the city with Boston Brew Tours. After stopping at Sam Adams Brewery Tour and Down East Cider House, we went to  Meadhall for lunch. We had a great lunch, which was paired with SoMe Brewing’s Whoopie Pie Stout. After lunch, our new guide said he liked this beer.  Therefore, I had to give it a try, especially since I hadn’t heard of this brewery before.

Location: On tap and served in a slightly curved pint glass at Meadhall in Cambridge, MA.

Numbers: 4.3% ABV, 140 Calories

Ingredients: malt: Fawcett golden promise, caramalt, oats; Hops: Citra, Mosaic, and more; Yeast: Ale.

Appearance & Aroma: It’s bright gold in color and very clear, with a bright, frothy white head that fell quickly to just barely cover the top. It has a bright, floral hop aroma.

Taste & Feel: The body was light and the mouthfeel was smooth with a hint of crispness from the carbonation. It has a light citrusy-floral hop flavor up front with some honey-like maltiness behind it.  In the middle, the hop flavor is mostly citrusy, but in the finish, the floral hop flavors overtake the citrus with only a little bit of bitterness behind it.  The citrusy hop flavors last briefly in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: The hop flavors in this beer were pretty light, and with the citrus, floral, and light honey flavors, I think it would be a great pairing to complement a light summer salad, since it’s flavors wouldn’t overtake even the salad by too much.

Overall Impression: This beer had a very light, bright flavor and body, with some crispness. I was disappointed with the light flavors in this beer, as I’ve grown to expect IPAs to have bigger ABVs, body, and flavor than this one offered.  If you’re a hophead that enjoys rich, flavorful IPAs, this will be like drinking water.
