08. Hövels Hausbrauerei - Hövels Original

I’m on vacation this week at Disney in Florida, and today, my family and I are visiting EPCOT. We had a nice day walking around the world showcase, and we stopped at the German pavilion for a Altenmünster Oktoberfest bier earlier in the day. I thought it would be fun to come back and have dinner here at the Biergarten Restaurant since it’s actually Oktoberfest right now in Munich. So, when our waitress asked, I ordered a liter of this beer.

Location: On tap and served in a German liter glass at the Biergarten Restaurant at the German Pavilion in EPCOT in Orlando, FL.

Numbers: 5.5% ABV, ~160 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was amber-auburn brown color and it had a huge, fluffy, off-white head on it that had great retention and left some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma was a bready and light caramel maltiness.

Taste & Feel: The body was light-medium and the mouthfeel was pretty smooth and lightly creamy from the head.  The flavor up front is light, with a dark bread and very light hints of caramel malts. The dark bready maltiness grows throughout the middle, and is joined by a lightly earthy hop bitterness in the clean, smooth finish. The light earthy bitterness and dark bready flavors last briefly in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This beer had dark bread and lightly caramel malty flavors, and went perfectly with my hearty German meal. In particular, it paired nicely with what you see here – the mushroom soup, pretzel, and different kinds of wurst. It added hints of flavors, but was light and drinkable enough that it helped to wash down the meal.

Overall Impression: Despite the hearty appearance of this beer, it was extremely drinkable, and this liter went down fast. It was smooth and slightly creamy, and the flavors were light and neutral. However, it had a nice subtle, complex mix of bready and caramel malty flavors with just the right amount of earthy hop bitterness to balance it. I couldn’t have asked for a better beer to get a full liter of with my hearty German meal (and the great Oktoberfest atmosphere). Overall, I really enjoyed it, and I’ll have to see if I can find any other Hövels biers here in the states.
