607. Allgäuer Brauhaus – Altenmünster Oktoberfest

607. Allgäuer Brauhaus - Altenmünster Oktoberfest

My family and I are on vacation at Disney, and today we’re visiting EPCOT. I’ve been looking forward to getting around the world showcase to visit the German Pavilion, since we’re here during Oktoberfest. While my son did the “Agent P adventure game,” I decided to grab an Oktoberfest bier from the stand out front with two beautiful, young German women serving beer, and take in the sights and smells (the aroma of sauerkraut was pretty heavy).

Location: On tap and served in a clear plastic pint cup at the Germany pavilion at EPCOT in Orlando, Florida.

Numbers: 5.5% ABV, ~ 160 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It was deep golden in color and slightly hazy with a finger-thick, foamy, bright-white head that had some good retention and some lacing (even on the plastic cup). There was a nice, light malty aroma with a light mix of bready, toasty, and caramel notes.

Taste & Feel: The body was light, and the mouthfeel was slightly creamy with some crispness. The flavor up front was a lightly sweet biscuit breadiness. In the middle some light toasty graininess came through the soft bready-caramel flavors. In the finish, there was a hint of earthy-spicy noble hop bitterness, but the maltiness prevailed and lasted for a brief time in the aftertaste.

Food Pairing: I ended up getting a pretzel here, and of course, it went nicely with that. However, the lighter flavor and body seems to be built for helping to put down some thick German food. From wurst to schnitzel, the biscuity flavors would add to the food, but it’s light enough not to fill you up.

Overall Impression: This beer was very light and drinkable, going down in a matter of minutes. However, it still offered some authentic Oktoberfest flavors, lightly serving up some nice sweet malty, toasty, and biscuity flavors with a touch of noble hop in the background. It was a great setting to sit and enjoy a beer, and it went down perfectly on this humid September afternoon.
