My wife is out of town for the weekend and it’s just me and the kids at home. We just ordered a pizza and the kids are watching a movie. I was outside for a little bit watering my hop plants and I really wanted something light to enjoy with the warm evening and the pizza. I picked up this beer a couple of weeks ago when I was in St. Louis over the fourth of July weekend. I’d been Urban Chestnut a few times and enjoyed their beers, so when I saw a mixed eight pack of their bottles at the local grocery store, I had to get it.
Location: Poured into a large, curved hefeweizen glass I got from Gordon Biersch at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5.2% ABV, 13 IBUs, 12.2 Plato OG, ~170 Calories
Numbers: Malts: German Pilsner, Unmalted wheat from a local Illinois farm; Hops: East Kent Goldings, Hallertau, Tradition.
Appearance & Aroma: It’s very hazy and dark gold/yellow in color. There’s A good amount of carbonation in it, however, the head fell almost immediately to just a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. The aroma is a mix of light citrus, including lemon and orange, coriander spice, and a light bready maltiness.
Taste & Feel: The body is light-medium and the mouthfeel is lightly crisp from the carbonation. The flavor is bready and somewhat yeasty up front with the orange and coriander flavors coming through in the middle. In the finish, the bready-orange flavors take center stage and last for a brief time in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing: AlthoughI had pizza, and it worked, the citrusy bready flavors are light and would pair wonderfully with a summer salad. Or, you could use this beer to help tame the spiciness of a summer dish like spicy fish tacos. Either way, it’s a lightly flavored beer that would work well with light summer dishes.
Overall Impression: It was light, refreshing, very drinkable on a hot evening like this. I enjoyed the light citrus flavors, balanced by the breadiness and slightly spicy coriander. Overall, I found it to have a wide range of flavors despite being so light. I recommend this beer for hot summer days and meals outside on the deck or porch.
