512. O’Fallon Brewery – Sticke it to the Man Sticke Alt

512. O'Fallon Brewery - Sticke it to the Man Sticke AltMaking my way through a hidden corner of the beer fridge, I’ve been having beers that have unintentionally aged a bit.  When this beer came out, probably a year and a half ago or so, I remember saying that I wanted to try it.  My friend @Chubvar, from the local beer club, had it and offered to bring me a bottle.  Not only did it have one of the best names of any beer, but I’d never had a Sticke style beer. Big thanks to John for giving me a bottle, and I was hoping it would last, since it was listed as 10% ABV.

Location: Poured into a slightly curved pint glass from the bottle, at my home in Bloomington, IL.

Numbers: 10% ABV, 380 Calories

Appearance & Aroma: It’s brown in color and fairly hazy, since there was a lot of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. There’s a lot of carbonation in it, however, the head is very thin, leaving only a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. It got a light fig newton-like aroma to it.

Taste & Feel: The body is full and the mouthfeel is smooth. It’s got light, almost Fig Newton-like and cardboard flavors up front, but changing to a muddy-woody Fig Newton-like flavor in the middle.  Those flavors mix with  some peaty-earthy bitterness in the finish. The Fig Newton and peat-like flavor grow a bit in the aftertaste with some smooth alcohol fusals flavors.

Food Pairing: The flavors in this beer were mostly bland, and I think it would probably pair best with a spicy dish, helping to knock down some of the spiciness.  For me, I’d probably go with some spicy hot wings.

Overall Impression: I figured at 10% ABV, this beer would hold up pretty well.  I’m not sure what it tasted like when it was fresh, but this one had an interesting mix of some rather bland flavors – Fig Newtons, cardboard, and earthy-peat like flavors.  The flavors weren’t great, but the alcohol flavors in this big beer were rather smoothed over time.  Overall, I was way more impressed with the name than I was with the flavor in this beer.
