258. Founders – Backwoods Bastard

Founders Brewing Backwoods Bastard Ale Aged in Oak Bourbon BarrelsAfter having the Founders Dirty Bastard yesterday, I was looking forward to having this one today.  If you aren’t aware, this one is the exact same as the Dirty Bastard, except that it has been aged in bourbon barrels.  I’m having this one while sitting here watching my Mizzou Tigers getting killed on ESPN3.

Numbers: 10.2% ABV, 50 IBUs

Appearance & Aroma: Deep brown in color, and surprisingly, it seems a little bit lighter and has more clarity than the Dirty Bastard I had last night.  There’s a thin creamy ring around the glass, but no head.  The aroma is very noticeable, and smelled like bourbon and charred oak barrels.

Taste & Feel: This too had a surprisingly lighter body than I was expecting with a light-medium body.  It had a very smooth mouthfeel with very little carbonation in it.  There was a warm bourbon-like flavor up front, and that burnt caramel flavor was noticeable for a slight bit in the middle.  It finished with a big, warm bourbon barrel flavor, which provided a nice alcohol warmth as it went down my throat.

Food Pairing: I had this at lunch, on a cold winter day with a bowl of chili, and it went together wonderfully.  Much like the Dirty Bastard, I think it would also go nicely with BBQ as well.

Overall Impression: I was really looking forward to this one, as I also really enjoy bourbon and bourbon barrel aged beers, and this one did not disappoint.  It had a very forward bourbon barrel flavor, especially when compared to the Dirty Bastard.  It might be a little much for some, but for this cold winter day, it was perfect.
