161. St. Louis Brewery / Schlafly – India Brown Ale Draft

As I mentioned in my last post, we went out with a couple of our friends in St. Louis.  So, for dinner, we decided to head over to the Schlafly tap room and have a few more beers and a nice dinner.  Usually I’m a fan of their beers, especially when they’re fresh on tap there at the tap room, however, I think I may have finally found an exception.

It was obviously deep brown in color and it had a creamy, thin white head on it.  There was a very citrusy hop aroma to it.

The body was fairly light and the mouthfeel was somewhat smooth with a bit of carbonation.  There was a bit of a watery malt flavor before I was smacked in the face with a big citrus hop flavor.  The citrusy hop flavor was overwhelming and lasted well into the aftertaste.

We had hummus and pretzels for an appetizer and they both came in very handy to cleanse my palate between drinks.  I’d recommend any bland food like these that could cut down on the bold citrusy hop flavor.

Overall, I was very disappointed with this beer as I normally like India Brown Ales.  There was very little malt backbone to this beer whatsoever.  Additionally, it’s like someone there discovered Citra hops and thought they’d try them in a beer just to see what it would be like… then they accidentally spilled the entire box into the boil kettle.
