My boss let me out of work early, so I came home to help get ready for Thanksgiving. My dad is here and my sister is on her way… Time for a beer to kick off the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend. I picked up this beer during a trip up to New Glarus with my friend Steve a couple months ago.
Location: Poured into a New Glarus tall pint glass at my home in Bloomington, IL
Numbers: 5.5% ABV, ~130 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s a dark brown– mahogany color and appears to be very clear. It has a thin, off-white head on it, and the aroma is mostly nutty, and a little malty.
Taste & Feel: The body is light and the mouthfeel is crisp, but almost watery. Up front, there’s a little bit of malty sweetness, with a nutty flavor that grows in the middle. The slightly dry finish is mostly nutty with a bit of earthy hop bitterness to balance the sweetness. The aftertaste is mostly nuttiness which lasts less than a minute.
Food Pairing: This beer would pair nicely with BBQ or a burger, with the nuttiness from the beer bringing a subtle complimentary flavor to the food.
Overall Impression: The flavors were good and somewhat light, making it a very drinkable beer. Although it’s a bock style beer, the flavor reminded me quite a bit of a nut brown ale. Overall, it’s a very approachable beer for macro beer lovers and would be a good light fall beer.
