It’s been a fun afternoon, shooting a video at work, and leaving early to get home and watch the kids while my wife goes to happy hour. I took the kids out to dinner at Moe’s, and when we got home I decided it was time for a beer. This one has been in the refrigerator for a while now. it’s one of the beers my sister picked up for me on her trip to Asheville, North Carolina. I’ve already had a couple of beers from this brewery, which have been good.
Location: Poured into a Stella Artois chalice at my home in Bloomington, IL.
Numbers: 5.5% ABV, 32 IBUs, ~160 Calories
Appearance & Aroma: It’s perfectly brown in color and very clear. It has a huge, cream-colored head, with incredible retention. it has an interesting earthy aroma that’s not quite malty or hoppy.
Taste & Feel: It has a very light body and a somewhat crisp mouthfeel from all the carbonation in it. The flavor up front is a slightly stale maltiness with almost no sweetness and a slight carbonation bite. In the middle, the maltiness opens up and becomes richer. The finish is earthy with a non-sweet malty flavor, and the combination is almost a tobacco-like flavor which lasts in the aftertaste for a couple of minutes.
Food Pairing: The tobacco-like flavor in this beer would pair best with grilled meat like BBQ or steak.
Overall Impression: I was a little bit put off by the somewhat stale malt flavor up front, but the flavors opened up in the middle, which I enjoyed. It wasn’t bad, and I actually liked the unique tobacco-like flavor in the finish, which reminded me of smoking a cigar. Overall, it was a decent beer, but I think I prefer the other beers I had from this brewery even more.
